Traveling Safely
Two types of taxis operate under license within the Borough:
Hackney Carriages have an illuminated roof sign. and have a meter
set to the Council's correct tariff and display a table of fares inside.
They can be flagged down for fares.
Private hire vehicles should be booked in advance with a
licensed taxi operator. They cannot pick up members of
the public off the street
All our fleet are easily recognizable with our distinctive
fleet colours of red and white. All our Hackney cars
have a white boot and bonnet and our private hire
vehicles are all red. Every vehicle has our name and
telephone number on the doors in white lettering and carries
a Hackney or Private Hire licence disc on
the windscreen and a Yellow Hackney plate or White
Private Hire plate attached to the rear of the vehicle.
Licensed drivers are required to wear their identification badge at

Traveling by taxi or private hire vehicle is generally very safe, but it is important to make sure the vehicle is licensed and to take sensible precautions.
Do not use a cab if:
The driver appears to be under the influence of alcohol
The driver does not seem to know the local area
The vehicle seems to be too old for use as a cab
The vehicle is in a state of disrepair
Booking a taxi or private hire vehicle
You can hail a taxi in the street or get one at a rank,
and the hiring can be arranged directly with the driver.
You can also pre-book a taxi.
Private hire vehicles must always be booked through a licensed operator.
When arranging a journey using a licensed private hire vehicle, it is a good idea to arrange a fare with the operator at the time of booking.
Licensed drivers are required to wear their identification badge and display a licence disc on the vehicle windscreen and a licence plate on the outside of the vehicle.
